Celebration of Light

Hi Everyone...

Back in Vancouver now at Madeline´s.  Tonight Canada competes in the National Fireworks competition.   The last two summers I have missed them due to timing, so it will be nice to see them...one of Mark´s and my favorite pastimes...think he will be watching over my shoulder, or from up above...

It´s hard to believe I have been in Canada for two months...the time has gone by quickly.  Looking forward to two weeks with Madeline before heading back to the Okanagan for Girl´s weekend, an annual event.  Floating in the lake, blender drinks and great food and company.

After that I will be spending time with my Dad and Bonnie, his wife, in Osoyoos and hopefully hooking up with my cousin Sheri and Steve to go camping or something.  Also more time in Kelowna with Shawn and Ashley and my dear friend Susan who just moved there from Vancouver.

Keep your notes and e-mails coming, folks.  The days are getting  a little easier, but it´s still taking time to get used to the idea that Mark´s gone.

Will post again soon.

July 18

Hello friends...

I am currently on my road trip with Mom.
We spent the weekend with Madeline, Debbie-Lee, Annabella and Susan, and Shawna and Ashley in Kelowna.  It was a very nice weekend...lots of humor, memories, and of course....OKANAGAN WINE!
We are in Lloydminster at Kristine and Alf's, just arrived yesterday and looking forward to several relaxing days, resting and just healing.
Some days are better than others, but we are coping, and I see a lot of things that remind me of Mark daily.  I sometimes find myself just staring off into space, still unable to accept that he will not be with me when I return to Sosua.
Clive and the staff at Checkpoint are doing a great job and as hard as it is, letting people know when they come down that Mark is no longer with us.
It will take a long time for everyone to hear the news because not everyone saw the news, especially non-Canadian residents.  I am so grateful to have such wonderful friends and family to help me through this sad time.
I will be in Vancouver to spend two weeks with Madeline at the end of July and then head back to Oliver for our annual girls weekend.
After that I plan to do some more visiting around BC.
I am still having a hard time returning all e-mails so hang in there everyone...use the forum to stay in touch as well.
Kristine has also been a Godsend...she answered a LOT of phone calls from all over the place, and still is fielding calls.
Thanks to all of you that called.  It is so nice to know Mark and I had souch an impact on so many people in the few years we had Checkpoint together.
No decisions made yet, just living one day at a time for now.  Will return to Sosua at the end of September but be back in Canada for Xmas/New Year's if all goes well.
I am hoping to go back to work at Checkpoint for the time being, until I know where I need to be in the short term.
Thanks for sharing your many memories and pictures and keep them coming...I am going to put togther a book of them.

Warm regards,
Colleen

In Loving Memory of Mark John Misner 07AUG53-29MAY07

This is the hardest note I have ever had to make on a usually upbeat,  informative website.

It is with deep sorrow that I must tell all of you that my loving husband Mark passed away suddenly in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

As you can imagine, we are all grief-stricken and in complete shock.

But your e-mails and prayers are being read and appreciated.  The outpouring of love and comfort from all of you, your prayers, and the strength of my faith in God are the rocks I need to keep me standing.

Obviously, it is going to be a while before I can write here again or partake in forum discussions.  At this moment, our forum Administrator Kristine (aka CopperSun) and my dear friend Clive (aka Spanky) are reading and answering the forum and telephone lines.

For anyone in Canada or elsewhere, who needs more information, Kris has graciously offered to field calls.  Her numbers are:  Phone: 306-825-0730 Cell 306-821-0100
God bless you Kris, for being such a friend in this time of need.

Mark was the love of my life- my soul mate and best friend.  He was my everything.  He made me laugh every day, and he touched the lives of all who passed through his life.  Hold on to those wonderful memories, dear friends!  They are what will keep us going today, tomorrow and through all eternity.  He will be watching over me and wanting me to somehow get out of the darkness and back into the light.  Pray with me, that I will overcome the darkest hours, and find that light again.

Peace and love,

Colleen

Coco Hotel Sosua- a great deal!

Greetings everyone!

Just wanted to introduce a new webpage and hotel that my new friend Gerry is operating in Sosua.  It is a small (12 room) totally renovated hotel and it is centraly located to downtown Sosua and its beach.  It is the Coco Hotel, and if you are looking for something small, but still the option of all inclusive (or not), check out their website!

Gerry has told me of a special they have right now, $300 CAD for a week, per person based on double.  Some rooms are air conditioned for those of you that can't handle the "heat" and they have a nice restaurant and pool.

So check out their website and you can email them right from their site.  View their photos.

If you have any questions Gerry can answer them all.

We'll be visiting soon and will post a review here and on our forum, so stay tuned!

Our New House

Well everyone, here's our news of the week!

We bought a house!  It is just out of town on the road to the International School and it is very sweet....Mom called it the Gingerbread House and Mark calls it the Hobbit House- me??? Well, I call it Mi Casa Primera!  (My first House!!!)  We take possession on Tuesday and are so excited- thank God Mom is here to help us move- after three years of Condo living we are looking forward to our move into Villas Karibik, the neighborhood we will now call our own.  There is room for a pool in the yard, and either an addition or garage/guest house.

It may take a week or two to get our internet up and running there so if we aren't on the Forum a lot, you'll know why, but Spanky and Kristine should be able to keep things rolling along!

Thanks for all your e-mails and for keeping in touch!!!

Greetings Everyone!

Well, I it has been a crazy few weeks!  Christmas with Mom here was awesome. She arrived the week before and we met up with our friends from Vancouver for a weekend at Playa Dorada.  We stayed at the Occidental Allegro and it was really nice- we had an awesome time with Jeanette, Roz and Erika.

The Saturday before Christmas, we hosted a Customer Appreciation Day at Checkpoint.  Our local regulars and their guests, as well as our family and friends came out for the afternoon/evening.  We had an impromptu 50/50 draw for Sosua Kids and raised about 6,000 pesos for the Kids.  Clive, our nighttime bartender had his ticket pulled, so tossed his share back in- very generous!  We had a nice array of food and put tables all around the front of the Plaza.  Music was blaring, and the Jello shooters were flying.  We opened some Champagne and a good time was had by all.

Christmas day we had 12 for dinner and though we wanted to do it on Sosúa Beach we encountered a few rain clouds so stayed at our condo.

We worked hard between Xmas and New Year's.  Things have picked up to the busy pace we love and thrive on. New Year's Eve we had a nice dinner at Bailey's and then went to the Britannia Bar.  It was a great start to a great night.  We then went to Checkpoint, and finished off the night dancing at Ruby's Lounge.  What a night.  It was the latest night I have had in AGES!

So here we are, already almost February!  Mom has been here a month (three left- YAY!).  What's to come?  A trip to Santiago shopping tomorrow.  A trip to Samana to visit friends on a cruise in two weeks and hopefully see the Whales.

With any luck we'll take a week off to get to Barahona, Santo Domingo and Boca Chica in March.  This is a trip Mark has wanted to take since we moved here.

Clive (a.k.a. Spanky) and Pam are in Vegas now for Pam's 50th birthday, and are missed by all.  Brooke and Karen are covering their evening shifts for the week.

Our other plan for this year is a trip to London, England.  We are working things out and hope to go for three or four weeks and visit some friends and my cousin Mike, who recently moved there to join his fiancé, Helen.

I just want to thank you all for your e-mails and for your personal visits.  We have made so many friends and have met people from all over the world since we moved here almost three years ago.

I will be posting more pics soon.

The forum has an unbelievable amount of new members.  Thanks for joining and keeping it alive!

Will post again when I have a chance.

La Finca

Hope everyone had a great Christmas! We celebrated with twelve of us under the Palapa at Condos Dominicanos!  We had planned on Sosúa Beach but it rained in the early afternoon- in the end it was a perfect day but we decided to stay put just in case.  We are gathering photos from everyone that was there to post here, so stay tuned.

I wanted to let everyone know that La Finca Restaurant has re-opened after extensive renovations this fall.  They have a webpage listed on sosuadomrep.com now and it is great.

For anyone who has visited Sosúa or is coming to Sosúa that has not been to this restaurant- we highly reccommend it.  It is a long time favorite of ours.  We cannot wait to go see the new renovations and the new upstairs seating- we'll be sure to post a review on our forum as soon as we have visited, possibly New Year's Eve.

Come back soon!

Firefox 2

Just want to let you know that if you use Firefox and have not been able to view this website properly- for example, the moving slideshow fails to display...uprade to Firefox build 2.0.0.1 and VOILA- problem solved! I switched to Firefox a long time ago but have had to use Internet Explorer myself to view this website properly, but it appears I can now continue to use Firefox, thanks to the new version.

I still refuse to upgrade to IE7, as too many people I know have had serious problems and have reverted back to using IE6, but this new version of Firefox appears stable and just fine!

7 Days 'till Christmas!!!

Hi everyone!

We had an amazing time at The Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada this weekend with Jeanette, Roz and Erika.  Roz and Erika are off to Ocean World today and The Dolphin Experience!  We can't wait to hear how their day goes!

The food and service at the Allegro was really great and on a very nice beach.  We went to the Jack Tar Casino Saturday night and managed to lose a few pesos, but Jeanette won, at least! ; )

Now we are back to Sosua and going to decorate the bar today and get ready for the next week of work- things are getting busier and I hope to have time to get on the forum today or tomorrow!

Until then, happy "sleep counting" !!!

I had an office near Check Point for about 4 years and saw Mark each day going to the supermarket to get supplies for the bar, we always used to say he was a hard working, dedicated guy. When news broke out about the incident that took him away, I was shocked that a guy like him would go through this and leave us all wondering why. I wish him good wherever we go when we`re done with this life, and to his family my deepest condolences.

It's been a long time since there has been an update on the life and times of Colleen and family! Fifteen months has passed since the sudden and untimely death of our beloved Mark. The journey has been heartbreaking, heartwarming, challenging and uplifting in more ways that you can imagine. Where would we be without our network of much loved family and friends? Colleen has faced many obstacles and has overcome them with grace and dignity - perhaps I am somewhat biased but she and I have been like Siamese twins and I don't think anyone knows her better than her Mom! I couldn't be more proud of Colleen. She has worked very hard to find her way and I know many of you will be overjoyed that she is now looking to a brighter more hopeful future. Many of her old clients and new ones to come will be very pleased that Colleen has gone back into the travel business. She'll be putting out more information in the coming weeks but she is excited and is ready to start helping people organize their holidays. We've been blessed with Pam, Clive and Bobby in our lives. They visited us for three weeks at the end of June and into July. Their first visit to Canada and more importantly, to the beautiful Okanagan Valley (sorry Kriss and Alf!). I think they were impressed that we could eat all of our meals outside on the deck overlooking the lake. Clive was actually warm for the first time in weeks! They went back to Saskatchewan, reunited with Bobby and came out to Kamloops on Via Rail where I picked them up. After an overnight visit with family, we drove to Oliver and they are now here for as long as they can stay in the country. We are so enjoying the three of them!! Our annual girlz weekend was August 1st where 23 of us got together for a fun-filled weekend of friendship. Robyne joined us for an entire week - although that seemed so short. Colleen flew back to Winnipeg with her and stayed there for a week to visit and do some travel re-training and then returned to Vancouver to visit with Madeline and get some business done. She is now in Whitehorse and area doing some sight-seeing and visiting there. She will be back to the Okangan sometime around the second week in September and will then seriously set up her home office. Summer has been good to us all. We've come a long way in this past year and we are extremely grateful to our friends and family for their continuing love and support. Love you all - and by the way, happy birthday to my son Shawn, and our friends Greg and Rembrand this day!!!!

    Colleen,
Sadly this morning I heard the news about Mark (someone had left me a note on my video of CheckPoint on youtube).  We loved spending time with both of you when we were in the DR and my contact with you in the months before our arrival was wonderful.  I am truly sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.
I have been reading your posts this morning and I know exactly how you feel as I went thru this in 1990....as time goes by the light and the happiness will return.  Mark made us feel right at home and he was so much fun!!
Dave, Myself, My parents and the rest of our group will keep you close in our thoughts.  Even though we are so far away, if there is anything you need, please dont hesitate to email me.

    Colleen,

We have never met, but I have a friend that is building condos in Sosua and will be back to visit in November 2007.  I will definitely look you up to give you a hug and have some warm conversation over a cool El Presidente.  Stay strong and enjoy the memories of Mark, it sounds like he was a wonderful man and a pleasure to be around.  I am sure that Sosua and it's people miss him.

Dear Colleen,  (and all of your circle of friends)

We are all filled with sadness and shock to hear of Mark's passing.  In the few days that we spent sitting at Checkpoint, we all felt as though both you and Mark had become great friends!
It all started in May of 2005, when  Randy & I took a early honeymoon, along with Randy's brother Tony, his wife Corrie and their two daughters Steph and Amanda.  Tony researched and found Checkpoint.  Loaded up with Mote's Clamato juice we set off to find you.  The days and nights that we spent with the two of you gave us so many wonderful memories, which to this day seem as though they were made only yesterday.
We send our many prayers and hugs to you to help you with the days to come.  Mark was such a wonderful and caring individual that we truly hope that he did not suffer any pain.
Colleen, as you embark on the next stage of your life, we hope that someday you will laugh again.  Granted that it will not be the same laugh that you shared with Mark all of those years, but it will be a new laugh, one that will put a smile on Mark's face like never before, because he will know that you no longer mourn his death, but that you are celebrating his life and all that he means to you.  We do hope that you will share with us from time to time, just how things are going.  Until then, take each day at a time and when you are ready, smile your bright smile!
